Celebrating a series of open studios across SE8 alongside some exciting new exhibitions opening at galleries in New Cross and Deptford for LAST Fridays this tour is a fantastic way to see it all and to meet the artists and curators behind the projects and studios in this creatively buzzing area of south London. The tour will kick off at BEARSPACE, with an exhibition of new works by Suzanne Moxhay and Geoff Diego Litherland as they present 'The Aftermath'. New exhibitions at Enclave will also be keeping us busy on route, among them LUBOMIROV EASTON, ANARCH and NEWS OF THE WORLD all previewing new shows on the night. We’ll round off the tour at open studios including APT’s ‘Christmas Parlour’ and The Zeitgeist Open Exhibition and Open studios all at ASC, New Cross. With a well deserved drink awaiting you at The Old Police Station’s legendary ‘Dirty Cop Fridays’.

Join us for part 2 of this Deptford focused art tour where we’ll be delving further into a wave of artist and designer open studios in the area:  A great chance to chat to the artists, meet the people behind the projects or if you’re on the prowl for some truly original Christmas gifts a chance to discover new designers and artists and invest in affordable one off pieces direct from the artists themselves!  No middle man, no high street chains, just innovation, originality and some very festive spirit on the way. 

Among the open studios we’ll be visiting: Hatch Space, Creekside Artists (whose mulled wine is legend!) and Cockpit Arts who have a well established reputation as an incubator for emerging design talent in London.  We’ll also be visiting some of Deptford’s artist run spaces and galleries on route with new exhibitions by both London based and international artists.

BEARSPACE presents DRAW/FLEX/DRAW/, an installation by Josie Cockram in association with Acme Studios’ Residency, Awards & Community Programme. This solo show is the climax of Cockram’s year long residency, showcasing the development of her practice during this time since her graduation from Camberwell College of Art in 2011.

DRAW/FLEX/DRAW/ examines and reveals all the mechanics of image production  which are typically invisible in the final piece. The installation takes over the whole gallery space and is comprised of several parts: two moving image projections, several drawings on acetate, a still on transparent film, and an internal reflection. The installation is self sufficient, providing it’s own light and reconfiguring its own making for the viewer to immerse themselves within.

BEARSPACE presents Anastasia Shin: Against the Plane, the first solo exhibition of British artist Anastasia Shin, premièring her new body of work.

In her painted and video work Shin embraces the notion of the pictorial realm as an unreachable space, inserting sculptural forms into a two dimensional world. Here objects hover in gravity defying space whilst constantly referencing their gridded linen and screen confines. Shin's work is influenced by the ritual of circumambulation(the act of walking around a sacred object), which is set in contrast to the static formations within her work whilst also commenting on the way the viewer interacts with the pieces themselves, tying spatial awareness to a specific location.

BEARSPACE presents EXHIBIT B, the second instalment of the ODDS AGAINST TOMORROW series, introducing artists Rachel Alliston, Priya Chohan, Matthew Gee, Tatiana May, Beth Shapeero and Anya Smith.

EXHIBIT B takes inspiration from anthropologist Michael Taussig’s work on shamanism - interpreting it to look at art and a relationship with material, magic and ritual. Artists evoke a sense of slippage - the wild infiltrating the urban, through the symbols and scenes in their practices: the multi-sensual, the dream, the wild, the relic, the ritual.

ODDS AGAINST TOMORROW is a platform of four exhibitions drawing together some of the most innovative and exciting artistic talent in the UK exclusively throughout 2012. Taking its name from Robert Wise’s classic 1959 Film Noir, ODDS AGAINST TOMORROW is curated by Julia Alvarez and Katherine Hawker who assume the role of detectives. Alvarez and Hawker unveil underground artists and arrange them into artists gangs, by identifying trends and talent for 2012 and tomorrow, compiling a snapshot artists anthology.

BEARSPACE presents EXHIBIT A, the first installment of the ODDS AGAINST TOMORROW series, introducing artists Rebecca Ackroyd, Thomas Adam, Talar Aghbashian, Dermott Punnet, Jayne A Smith and Gabo Guzzo.

‘I’m just going outside & I may be some time’ were the fateful last words spoken by Captain Lawrence Oates, who perished during the Terra Nova Arctic Expedition to collect Emperor Penguin eggs of 1910–1913. Dubbed the ‘Worst Journey In The World’, the party of six Englishmen were stranded for 21 months as ships could not reach them, and forced them to shelter from the brutal Antarctic winter in a cave dug into the snow.

EXHIBIT A takes this phrase as a jumping point - artists imagine desolate landscapes, isolation, and futuristic visions after the apocalypse through their individual practices.

Dermott Punnet and Jayne A Smith paint lush, neo-modernist scenes which span between the utopic and distopic, while Talar Aghbashian’s sci-fi inspired paintings com found imagery with painterly intimacy spanning optimism and pessimism.

Rebecca Ackroyd and Thomas Adam utilise graphite and traditional drawing skills to enact the suspense and terror of the last living man, and Gabo Guzzo’s sound piece sets a score to the scene: the quiet murmur of an abandoned vista.

BEARSPACE is pleased to present Wanderlust: the new work of Reginald Aloysius and Jane Ward, after the success of their work in Brave New World at London Art Fair 2012. Aloysius and Ward take us on a journey through vast, imagined landscapes in digital print (Ward) and graphite drawing (Aloysius), combining intricate technical skill in their respective mediums with conceptual and aesthetic inventiveness.

Travel is inherent to the practice of both Aloysius and Ward, to whom traveling provides an infinite resource to be drawn upon in their London studios. Wanderlust[early 20th c. German: a strong desire to travel] showcases travel as creative endeavor in the strikingly different and similarly provocative results of both artists’ far flung fieldwork.

Aloysius’ preoccupation with travel stems from his Tamal routes, notions of transnationality and the loss of tradition in multinational communities. This is enforced through his meticulous graphite pieces, fearlessly etched into. Aloysius completed his MA at Kingston University and has since been selected for the Jerwood Drawing Prize and the ING Discerning Eye Exhibition, and continues to exhibit widely internationally.

Ward’s dreamlike pieces are borne of her process of layering digital prints, then carefully removing the top ink to reveal under layers. Ward has amassed a huge image library, juxtaposing places and scenes in her work, enacting processes of remembering and forgetting. Ward completed her MA at the RCA and has since been awarded the Terence Conran Foundation Award and the Tim Mara Prize, and has exhibited widely.

Both Aloysius and Ward live and work in London.

FORM vs FORM: Abbi Torrance and Paul Ridyard

BEARSPACE is pleased to present Abbi Torrance and Paul Ridyard in FORM vs FORM: an exhibition bringing together their unique practices to investigate the construction of perception through social and romantic ideologies and formations.

Both Torrance and Ridyard show new work: large scale figurative drawings inspired by synchronised swimming formations by Torrance on graph paper, and deeply intricate knarled tree roots and natural phenomenon drawn and mounted by Ridyard.

FORM vs FORM triumphs drawing as a revelatory and relatable medium, exposing the tension between the organic and the highly controlled aspects of contemporary society. Torrance and Ridyard create a paired down and clean aesthetic, instigating a rebirth for drawing in an image and media heavy world.

Drawing is used to tackle questions of heterogeneity and connectivity in a diverse world where plants and even people can be ‘reduced to a pattern’ (Torrance). Deleuze and Guattari write in A Thousand Platteaus, ‘Make a map, not a tracing...what distinguishes the map from the tracing is that it is entirely oriented toward an experimentation in contact with the real’ (D&G, 1987). It is in this way that both artists engage with their subjects, not through mimicry but by constructing specific viewing experiences of real situations and phenomenon.

Torrance’s work examines how society puts ideologies into action which influence and determine the independence of individuals. Torrance uses the way that large corporations see individuals as data and demographics to transform groups of people into choreographed formations, highlighting the current social landscape. Torrance is a previous prize winner of the Teddy Smith National Art Competition, has been featured by Dazed and Confused, has been exhibited in Hung, Drawn and Altered curated by Baylors & Diamond and has been awarded the Commissions East Grant for intervention projects.

Ridyard’s practice explores what constitutes the natural and the manmade, creating drawings which challenge our existing encounters with landscapes. Ridyard seeks out specific sights such as exposed roots and work from photographs constructing pieces which simultaneously allow and obscure the viewers’s perception, demonstrating an inability to fully comprehend our surroundings. Ridyard has shown work in a number of group exhibitions in London, at The London Art Fair and Affordable Art Fair, and has undertaken several research trips throughout Europe and America.

Both artists recently completed their MA at Wimbledon College of Art and live and work in London.

Following a fantastic exhibition at the SW1 Gallery in August, BEARSPACE is pleased to present PRINT & DESIGN NOW! 2011, a pioneering open- submission exhibition set to feature over 150 works by emerging artists and designers who specialise in the mediums of print and design.

Artworks have been selected by a panel of arts professionals ensuring the very best quality of work on show. These include, Julia Alvarez, Director of BEARSPACE, Owen Ward, SW1 Gallery Manager and Mary-Alice Stack, Director of the Own Art Scheme at Arts Council England.

This exhibition showcases the very best in contemporary art and design at prices that are affordable to the younger collector and great examples of limited edition print and design objects by up and coming artists from all over the country. Take this opportunity to invest in artists of the future as selected by some of the UK’s most distinguished authorities on art and design.

Prices range from £25 - £1000 for editioned prints and one off works.

BEARSPACE presents the first solo exhibition in the UK of Matthew Mc Guinness, featuring works constructed during his day job as a cook. Mc Guinness will be filling the gallery with art works created from the ephemera taken from the kitchens in which he works. These include detailed sketches and thoughts on T-towels from some of London’s top restaurants. Amongst cooking stains they inscribed with song lyrics from the grateful dead, details of orders and strange doodles all created in between service. He connects these works to the rebellious world of writing on things, graffiti lettering created swiftly and instinctually. Other sculptures and collage works on show are created from found food packaging.

BEARSPACE is pleased to present the first UK exhibition of new works by American artist Vincent Troia curated by Darren Barrowcliff.

Troia has lived and worked in both Detroit and South Korea. In this exhibition, collage and sculpture merge to create works that are at once both 3- and 2- dimensional. Troia utilizes found images of aerial landscapes and people, folding them into various polyhedral shapes. He incorporates found damaged paper materials, dirtied textile scraps, discarded packaging and occasionally featuring other small street sourced findings.

American curator Darren Barrowcliff met Troia in Detroit, attracted to Troia’s skill in achieving a decisive abstraction, connected to the strong yet subtle choice of imagery, supporting the unique appeal of the Troia’s works. Barrowcliff describes the artist’s ability to “fit a feeling of contemporary finish with historical references, alongside tongue in cheek and trompe l’oeil. The work speaks of youthful angst yet is full of profound wisdoms.”

BEARSPACE presents a new series of works by artist Seung Pyo Hong. Hong employs a unique style of editioned metal plate acid etchings, hand coloured in oil paint, based on the functionality of humans, animals and machines. BEARSPACE first presented this artist’s work in 2010 soon after the artist’s graduation from Goldsmiths College. The exhibition at BEARSPACE ‘Mecha’ received rave reviews and Hong has been working on a new series of large steel plate etchings and print editions during 2010-2011.

Hong’s works depict fictional inventions in a very graphic style, through which he explores the relationship between human evolution and the development of technology. These bright works, directly etched and coloured onto steel plate, focus on the potential fusion of organic matter and machine. This is a futuristic sentiment, used as a motif in scifi throughout the 20th Century. Referencing this, Hong uses retro machinery and characters from the 60’s and 70’s highlighting aspirations from the time fused with scientific development of more recent years. In his odd but fascinating scenes, the viewer is almost left as a detective, working out what a piece of machinery is for, what the characters are playing out and where the scene is set. One is reminded of scenes from ‘Prisoner’ due to the works retro, colourful and mystical feel.

BEARSPACE features a new collection of original large-scale works on paper by artist Isabel Rock, exploring matriarchal themes aesthetically informed by time spent in India. These intricate works display figures engaged in complex chains and circles. Flocks of birds sweep through and consume these drawings; Rock describes these birds as both decorative and threatening in their numbers and their voracious appetite.

BEARSPACE features new digital canvas works by Jane Ward. Ward's meticulously constructed works are composed of layer upon layer of digital imagery collaged together then broken down and collaged many times over to present an unseen landscape. The images are printed onto canvas from which the ink is dissolved and manipulated by hand. The residue that remains after the ink is removed leaves behind its trace, which carries within it a sense of loss and the evidence that something was there. The combination of that which is present with that which is not creates a reordering that leads us to question the layering of memory within landscape. The work often depicts fragments of the idealised miniature environment of a model village with images taken of the natural world. The subsequent confusion of scale and fragmentation of imagery plus this partial erasure of the image leads to many questions regarding our perception of the world. For example what constitutes reality and what the imaginary, can it be fixed or is it a state of flux, what is utopian and what dystopian?

Jane Ward graduated from the Royal College of Art, MA Printmaking course in 2007. Her work has featured in Artfutures (2002), Celeste Art Prize (2007) Bloomberg New Contemporaries (2008) and she has been awarded the Terrence Conran Foundation Award and the Tim Mara Prize.

BEARSPACE presents FEUDAL @ The London Art Fair Art Projects

An exhibition of two emerging artists work Jasmina Cibic and Suzanne Moxhay , dealing with the concept of systems within mediaeval living, Iconic images of birds, trees, nature, and habitation all come into play alongside bright neon colours and filmic settings.

Slovenian photographer Jasmina Cibic, creates open landscapes, working with striking and unusual animals and sculpture to juxtapose the natural with the architectural and constructed. The series on show ‘Falco’ sees the artist working with live falcons and classic sculptures either sourced or reconstructed by the artist. These dark, alluring works are sexy, sinister and regal depicting perfectly the upper echelons of feudal existence. The falcon was a form of medieval hunting, a delight for the nobles, which became a sport. Cibic captures these regal creatures pictured against sculptural forms from the modernist era, taste, style and poise perfectly communicated.

Suzanne Moxhay’s work from the series ‘Feralis’ focuses on land and habitation. Ancient ruins and overlaid with overgrown lush landscapes. Simple habitations are found amongst vast lakes. It is as thought the viewer stumbles across a feudal scene, overgrown and outdated, but still with the magic and allure of the peasant that once worked there and claimed the land as their own. Moxhay’s unique style include model making in her studio, where glass and photographs are used to construct these medieval scenes, lost to the world but captured through her prints.

Time Out have called Deptford as ‘fuelled by a can-do approach to capture the moment!’ The Guardian labeled Deptford ‘London’s newest art scene.’ Discover this for yourself; meet designers and artists in and around Deptford, whilst fuelling yourself on hot cider and a mince pie or two.

Over 15 venues will be open in Deptford over this weekend from the excellent Cockpit Arts designer maker studios to exhibitions, cultural shops and artists studios.
Most galleries in Deptford will also be open during this weekend.

BEARSPACE will host a room of wonderful objects on plinths displaying multiples to singular pieces, assemblage to porcelain. This exhibition forms a snapshot of current trends in new types of sculpture, bringing together small works by emerging artists concerned with assemblage and sculpture. Artists have been selected from several art colleges in 2010, as well as a range of artists familiar to BEARSPACE these include; Blue Curry, Jonathan Trayte, Ellie Doney, Luke Twigger, Krister Klassman, Jasmina Cibic and Wayne Lucas. Each piece resembles a particle of the artist’s full practice. Some artists work only through the medium of sculpture for others sculpture forms only a part of their process.

BEARSPACE PRESENTS SUZANNE MOXHAY'S SOLO SHOW - FERALIS

BEARSPACE is pleased to present “Feralis” the debut solo exhibition by digital artist Suzanne Moxhay.

Moxhay will present a new series of work based on a feral and ery scene, typically playing with the overlaying of her own photographs, film imagery and found landscapes to create new worlds, created in the artists mind and projected onto paper through print.

With the rise of new modes of special effects and ways in which realities are being explored within film, Moxhay uses the language and technical facilities of filmmakers and special effects to create artwork that engages with new media and ideas of utopian landscapes and deathly scenes.

“Feralis” refers to something that is feral, and dangerous.

Suzanne Moxhay (b. 1976, Essex) lives and works in London. After completing a BA Hons in Painting at Chelsea College of Art she went on to The Royal Academy Schools where she graduated with a Post Graduate Diploma in Fine Art in 2007.

Recent exhibitions include ‘GSK Contemporary: Earth Art of a Changing World’ at the Royal Academy of Arts, and ‘The Wild as Will and Mediation’, Wiebke Morgan, London. Her animation work has been shown as part of the programme ‘Do Billboards Dream of Electric Screens?’ on BBC public screens in cities across the UK.
She is currently a Print Fellow at the Royal Academy Schools.

MULTIPLIED: Contemporary Editions Fair 15-18 October 2010

BEARSPACE Gallery is collaborating with Christie's South Kensington and over thirty other London Galleries in 'MULTIPLIED', a brand new and exciting Art Fair debuting this year, coinciding with Frieze Art Fair in close-by Regents Park.

MULTIPLIED aims to showcase and promote emerging artistic talent from artists working and showing in London, as well as providing a platform for the cities most pioneering independent galleries and publishers.

Expect to see the best of as yet unknown artists alongside the creme de la creme of established artists working today (Tracey Emin and Damien Hirst will be showing), providing a unique opportunity for artistic discovery for 'the next big thing' or a lucrative investment.
